Attorney General Jeff
Landry Urges SCOTUS To Overturn Roe vs. Wade
WASHINGTON, DC – The United States Supreme Court will
hear oral arguments today in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a
case that could return decisions about abortion policymaking to the states.
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, who filed a legal brief in this case supporting Mississippi’s law limiting
abortions after 15 weeks of gestation with exceptions for health emergencies
and fetal abnormalities, hopes the court will rule in favor of the ban and
overturn Roe v. Wade.
“By 15 weeks, children in the womb not only have formed
all their major organs; but they also can feel pain,” said Attorney General
Landry. “It is past time for our laws to reflect the science – protecting the
health of the mother and the life of her unborn baby.”
Louisiana has a companion trigger law, nearly identical
to Mississippi’s, that would go into effect if the Supreme Court upholds the
15-week ban.
"Our State’s representatives, held accountable by
their constituents, should determine abortion policy not the federal
government,” added Attorney General Landry. “The Constitution is clear: there
is no right to abortion and the powers not delegated to the United States by
the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the
States respectively, or to the people.”
While oral arguments are December 1, a decision by the Supreme Court is
not expected until well into next year.
